🪽Prosecution Reveals Causes of the Tragic Menoufia Accident

• The Egyptian Public Prosecution has confirmed that it is conducting urgent investigations into the traffic accident that occurred on the Regional Ring Road in Monufia Governorate, which resulted in the death of 19 people and the injury of 3 others while they were on their way to work.

• The Prosecutor added: “As a result, the driver responsible for the accident was arrested and brought before the Public Prosecution, which ordered his pretrial detention pending investigations.

• Laboratory analysis of a sample taken from him confirmed that he was under the influence of narcotic substances at the time of the incident.”

• The Public Prosecution expressed its “deep sorrow and grief over the victims of this tragic accident” and extended its “sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to their bereaved families,” according to the statement.

• It also clarified that its jurisdiction is limited to criminal cases and does not include civil lawsuits, in line with its legally defined role.

• However, it explained that the victims’ families, the injured, or anyone harmed by the accident have the right to pursue civil claims during the ongoing criminal investigations, before the competent criminal court, or by filing an independent civil lawsuit before a relevant civil court — in order to preserve their legitimate rights.

• Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi instructed the government to raise compensation by EGP 100,000 for each death and EGP 25,000 for each injury, on top of the amounts already provided by the Ministries of Labor and Social Solidarity in relation to the accident.

• In a tweet on her social media, Intisar El-Sisi, the wife of the Egyptian president, urged the Red Crescent to promptly offer both psychological and material support to the victims’ families

• The prosecution further noted that the beneficiaries or heirs of the victims are entitled to claim the insurance compensation designated for licensed fast-transport vehicle accidents without the need to resort to litigation.

• Moreover, the injured parties or the heirs of the victims also have the right to pursue legal action against the person responsible for the accident and those liable for civil damages to claim compensation beyond the insurance amount, in accordance with the Unified Insurance Law.
